“If the Incredible Hulk and the Dalai Lama had a love child…”

June 5th, 2012 by Tam Tran

I absolutely love my path in life. I get to meet fellow New Yorkers such as Gabriella – a folk singer/songwriter/producer here in NYC. Among her many activities, she also hosts a monthly folk fusion series with DJ Oja called Landing On Earth, at Two Moon Art House & Café/ 315 4th Avenue , Brooklyn, NY  (last Friday of every month 7pm – 8pm). Check her out and see her transform as she goes through the Rolfing(R) Ten Series!

Gabriella is all about self-expression. Here, she wanted to share with you her experience with me. It’s a good one! You’ll bound to laugh and possibly be inspired:

I came to Tam Tran at the request of my partner, Stephanie. Stephanie knew that no matter how many casual couch massages she gave me, it would never be enough to break through years of built up head, neck and back tension.

Stephanie suggested Rolfing(R) with Tam since she came highly recommended from someone in our  Tai Chi Class. “She has a very calm, healing touch..there is something special about her” is what was said about Tam.

So, I decided to find out for myself. Honestly, Rolfing was too much of a big step for me to take right away. I heard it was painful and I was not interested in pain. So, just to dip my toe in,  I went for a massage first.

When Tam opened the door her stature shocked me. “She’s so tiny,” I thought. Truthfully, I’m a full figured woman at 210 lbs. I have years of built up stress and it lives in my neck and back. I had been to  many massage therapist over the years, many of them having been big burly men, and even they had a challenge working their way through my Viking shoulder knots and stubborn lower back tension.

So, when I  first saw Tam, a petite woman who couldn’t have been more than 5 feet and 100 lbs., I seriously wondered, “ Will she be able to handle me?” All I can say is that if the Incredible Hulk and the Dalai Lama had a love child it would be Tam Tran. She cut through my knots and muscle tension like a knife through softened butter, all the while being so truly zen. She’s a glass of cucumber vitamin water dressed up like human being.

When I left the session I was more relaxed than I had been in years. Too many years. It was the beginning of a whole new me.

Having had such a successful and healing massage session, I decided to go for the plunge and sign up for Rolfing. Again, I  heard it was painful, but now I trusted Tam. So, I decided, if the pain meant realigning my body and reducing stress significantly I was happy that Tam would be my guide through the process.   As it turned out,  the first session was not all “OW!” free but, it was worth it, and continues to be worth it.

My body is changing for the better, step by step, session by session. There is definitely something special about Tam Tran. Perhaps it is the way she listens to the nature of the body — the way she organically tunes in. Maybe, it’s her subtle, humble, unexpected, strength. (One expects her to reveal her super-hero cape at any given time.) Or, it could be that her constant smile comes from a deep inward place and resonates outwardly, into her healing hands.

I really don’t know. I just know that I feel really comfortable in her care and I’m getting the results I came for.  And I am getting the healing that I have wanted for a long time.

Deep breath in ….. Exhale.   Gabriella Callender Singer, Songwriter mahinamovement.com
